Analysis

Standard-review tier (gap ~11%). The market at 46% implies a year-end median near ~2.97%, i.e. Some upward drift is defensible (hiking cycle, FY2027 issuance plan, US 10Y at 5%), but the main catalyst (Dec hike) is largely priced, momentum since early October has been down, domestic insurers and foreign funds are buyers at these levels, and the October BOJ meeting is a near-certain hold. I land at ~37%: between the pure vol model (27-30%) and the market, respecting that JGB traders may be pricing the year-end fiscal/issuance catalyst better than public sources show. Not large enough for high conviction given two months of yield volatility, so modest sizing. Note the 2.8-3.0 rung at 19% looks underpriced (~28-30% under my distribution) but liquidity is only $405, so I keep the trade on the main market.

Key Evidence

Driftless vol sizing (~4bp/day, ~26bp SD over 42 sessions) gives ~27%; adding modest upward drift for the hiking cycle/fiscal catalysts lands ~35-40%.

Risks

The Dec 18 BOJ hike comes with hawkish terminal-rate guidance and/or the late-December FY2027 JGB issuance plan surprises on the upside, global long-end yields (US 10Y ~5%) resume selling off, and the 10Y JGB re-tests the September/October 3.05-3.12% zone right at the Dec 30 print — a +16bp move that is only ~0.6 sigma over 42 sessions and that the market was already trading five weeks ago.
